Long description
Silver plated samover. The main body [1.] of the samovar consists of a vessel on a low pedestal with four feet and two wooden handles. Approximately a third of the way up the main body is a spout with tap for extracting the boiling water. Inside the main body is a fixed central section where the heat would be transferred from coals placed inside it to the water surrounding it. There is a small ill-fitting metal lid [.2] with loop central handle which would be placed on top of the central section [.1]. A lid or collar [.3] is placed on top of the main body of the samovar. This lid or collar bears an incised crest and an inscription giving the name of the maker and location of manufacture - the samovar was made at the Batashev family metalworks in Tula, Russia. On top of the lid or collar sits a support [.4] upon which would be placed a tea pot. [MdeA 23/5/2005]
