Description
Black skirt with blue stripes and supplementary weft work in red wool and black yarn, a ‘poor woman’s skirt’.
Long description
Black skirt with blue stripes and supplementary weft work in red wool and black yarn, a ‘poor woman’s skirt’. The cloth comprises two lengths of black cotton textile stitched together with black thread. One of the lengths has two blue warp stripes which have been worked with red and black opposing triangle designs and diamond designs. The designs are formed by supplementary weft inlays of red wool and black yarn, with the ends of the red wool threads extending as short decorative lines into the black background. In total there are twelve opposing triangle designs and six diamonds in each blue stripe, running in a sequence of three opposing triangles followed by two diamonds. The other length of cloth has a similar blue stripe which contains nine of the red and black opposing triangle designs. On the first length of cloth, next to the seam, is a thin blue line (four warp threads), flanked by two peach-coloured lines (three warp threads). This is worked along its length with twenty-six rectangular designs in red wool supplementary weft inlay. Each design comprises seven or eight short transverse lines. The warp ends of the cloth have been twisted into a fringe at both short edges. Just above each fringe are four transverse peach-coloured stripes (each three weft threads), with three thin blue lines (one warp thread) in between.
