Description
Iron tool with cylindrical body that divides into arc shaped prongs at either end, possibly used as a netting shuttle [DCF Court Team 29/4/2003]
Long description
Tool made from an iron rod with a round sectioned body. This has been hammered flat on both the upper and lower surfaces at either end, with each end then split with a chisel to create two short prongs with rectangular sections. These have been bent and slightly twisted to form 2 curving arms that come together at their tips, but do not quite touch. There is a small v-shaped tear in the metal at the base of these arms where they come away from the tool body. The object is complete and intact, with hammering marks visible on the surface, and is currently a dark gray colour (Pantone cool gray 10C) with traces of red rust on the surface. It has a total length of 215 mm and weighs 19.2 grams. The body has a diameter of 4 mm; each arm is 1.5 to 2 mm wide and 2 mm thick, and measures 14 mm and 16 mm across each arm respectively [RTS 18/8/2004].
