Long description
Booklet made from sheets of paper sewn together, containing six paintings of scenes of Indian life. The images have been painted using talc pigments and mounted onto pages in the book. The first image shows a rural scene featuring two white cows, a man with a cart. a tent in the background and trees. Penciled in below the picture is the title 'an Encampment'. The second image shows two men standing beside a large red cabinet/chest which has been placed on a dark blue mat. The scene is set outdoors and in the background are trees. The man on the left is taller than the man on the right and he wears a tall gold hat, pink trousers a white and red belt and holds a lute. The figure on the left wears white robes and a tall orange hat. Penciled beneath the image are the words 'Jabooth'. The third image shows a man and a woman working in brown fields bordered by hedges. The man holds a pick/hoe and works in a bare field. The woman is planting small green plants. She wears a blue dress robe and the man wears a white loin cloth. Penciled beneath the image are the words 'Transplanting rice'. The fourth image shows a white walled building with a red roof and verandah where five people are gathered. Four of the group are sitting and one stands playing some form of instrument. On the left side approaching the building are a man and child. The man wears full white robes and a red hat. Penciled beneath the image are the words 'Native school'. The fifth image shows two men in an outdoor scene with trees on the horizon. The man on the left wears full white robes while the man on the right wears only short trousers and carries a yoke loaded with numerous birds. The penciled text beneath the image reads 'Selling live fowls'. The sixth and final image shows two men standing beside a large wooden structure which incorporates a central wheel with four seats. In each seat sits a child and the men below are turning the wheel as a roundabout. There are trees on the horizon. The penciled text beneath the image reads 'Indian roundabout'. [LKG 17/11/2009]
