- Long description
- A fitted veneered desk ornamented in brass [.1], with ink well [.2] and 2nd ink well [.3] with detached lid [.4] key [.5] and two velvet covered internal lids [.6-7] The writing desk has a letters box attached to the top. This has a hinged lid and lock and 5 slots for letters. There are two small, lidded compartments, one either side of the letter slots. The lids are [.6-.7] The two glass ink wells have stand a stand on each side of the letters box. These stands are made of brass and lined with very worn blue textiles. The lid of the desk has an inscription plaque that reads: "PRESENTED TO MISS S U POWYS by the Members of THE BOURNEMOUTH CENTRAL WORKMEN'S CLUB Christmas 1877" The lid of the desk folds out to make a writing surface. This surface is covered with blue velvet that has an impressed decoration around the edge. The inkwells are made from glass or lead crystal. and have hinged brass lids. One contained red ink and the other contained black. The residues are still visible. [SM (Verve) 05/02/2015]
