Description
Circular black leather shield, conical, with tooled decoration. [MJD 28/07/2010]
Long description
Circular shield of black leather, conical, with upturned rim rounded back at the edge, and with a disc-shaped central boss with a nipple, set in a trough; the rim is pierced with marginal holes. Rigid semi-circular handle of leather wrapped around a (?wooden) core, each end lashed through the shield with two stout thong stitches. The rim has a thong attached for suspension, knotted through two of the marginal holes. The outer surface is tooled with alternating ring bands and crosshatched bands up to the edge, with a zigzag star pattern encircling the central trough. [MJD 28/07/2010]
