Research and responses

This object was included in a survey to identify Cellulose Nitrate in the Tortoiseshell combs found in the collection. This object was examined under x40 magnification. As filler material is present in unpigmented areas and the pigmentation is not granular this object, it was decided that this material was synthetic, and probably cellulose nitrate. Further analytical testing would be required to confirm this. [AH 16/10/2008]
