This is a large drawing by Alfred Robinson reproducing (in reverse) the cast of an Upper Palaeolithic engraving on bone showing a mammoth, presumed to have been used to illustrate a lecture (or lectures) by E. B. Tylor. The cast of this engraving [1884.68.6] was part of the Pitt-Rivers founding collection, one of eighteen 'casts of bones with pre-historic carvings'; the bone itself was discovered in a cave in Dordogne, France.
