- Long description
- Racquet-shaped painted, silk-embroidered fan with outer edge and central strut bound in blue and an incised wooden handle. The design embroidered onto the silk is of many colours: purple, light blue, yellow, green, peach and dark peach and light purple. The image painted onto the central part of the fan shows two women, one in a blue robe, one in purple looking down to their right at the pale blue ground beneath. A grey rock is painted on the right side of the fan and a large peach flower has been embroidered on top of this. A smaller blue and purple fan has been embroidered above the women's heads. The outer border of the fan consists of many variously coloured and embroidered flowers. These flowers are edged on the inner side by a sewn border in dark blue. The handle of the fan is of a dark, varnished wood and extends from the bottom third of the silk centre of the fan down. The handle is rounded and broadens out at the bottom, where a disc of ivory has been inserted to the base with a length of blue thread passed and tied through the two holes in the ivory. The incised design on the handle is foliate in style. [LKG 15/10/2009]
