Pitt Rivers undertook excavations at Cissbury in January 1868 and between June - September 1875. He had previously fieldwalked many Sussex hillforts in September 1867. These excavations involved many members of the Anthropological Institute, including James Harrison and George Rolleston. Relevant publications are: Lane Fox, A. 1869. ‘An examination into the characters and probable origins of the hill forts of Sussex.’ Archaeologia 42:27-52 and ‘Further remarks on the hillforts of Sussex: being an account of excavations in the forts of Cissbury and Highdown’ Archaeologia 42:53-76. The following were all published in the Journal of the Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland: Lane Fox, A. 1875. ‘Excavations at Cissbury Camp’ 5:357-390; Harrison, J.P. 1877. ‘On marks found upon chalk at Cissbury.’ 6:263-271; Harrison, J.P. 1877. ‘Report on some further discoveries at Cissbury.’ 6:430-442; Harrison, J.P with Jeffreys, J.G. 1878. “Additional discoveries at Cissbury.’ 7:412-431; Rolleston, G. 1877. ‘Note on the animal remains found at Cissbury.’ 6:20-36; Rolleston, G. 1879. ‘Notes on skeleton found at Cissbury, April 1878.’ 8:377-389 [CB 8/12/2009]
