Ferry Hinksey is an alternative name for North Hinksey [SP 494 054], a small village located to the west of Oxford in the parish of North Hinksey and the district of the Vale of White Horse. North Hinskey is occasionally referred to as Ferry Hinksey because a ferry crossed Hinksey Stream [a branch of the River Thames] at this point from the 14th Century AD onwards providing a direct route between the village and Oxford. For more information on the history of the area please see: Ditchfield, P.H. and Page, W (eds.). 1924. 'Parishes: North Hinksey' in A History of the County of Berkshire: Volume 4. London: Victoria County History (pp. 405-408). This is available online at https://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=62738. [AP 17/08/2006; MN 16/12/2008]
It seems likely that stone tools 1906.69.1 - 1906.69.7 may have been purchased from G.L. Rogers who resided in North Hinksey and had previously sold another stone tool to the museum [see 1905.24.1]. [AP 22/02/2007] [MN 16/12/2008]
The Percy Manning archive at the Ashmolean Museum contains an annotated copy of the PRM annual report for 1906 (ID 1558) which refers to the purchase of this object. The archive is accessible online at http://www.ashmolean.museum/ash/amps/oha/Index.html. [MN 20/10/2009]
